Cabarrus County's Liam Vang Develops AllerScan to Simplify Allergen Detection |
In Cabarrus County, 14-year-old Liam Vang has introduced AllerScan, a smartphone application designed to assist individuals managing food allergies.
Available now on the Apple App Store, with a forthcoming release on Google Play, AllerScan enables users to swiftly identify potential allergens by scanning product barcodes. As we do not know what the app will look like in the on Google Play, our image is more of a place holder.
Vang, who personally contends with a peanut allergy, recognized the challenges of meticulously reading ingredient lists.
He envisioned an app that could streamline this process, offering peace of mind to others facing similar dietary restrictions.
Users can input their specific allergens into their profile; upon scanning a product's barcode, the app indicates its safety for consumption.
If a product contains allergens, AllerScan provides directions to the nearest emergency room, enhancing safety measures.
Vang's initiative aligns with a broader movement in Charlotte toward accommodating food allergies.
For instance, Seemingly Overzealous, a dairy-, gluten-, and egg-free ice cream shop, expanded to Dilworth in May 2025, reflecting the city's growing demand for allergy-friendly dining options.
Additionally, organizations like Parents of Allergic Kids (PAK) offer support and resources to families managing food allergies, further fostering a community of awareness and assistance.
Vang's dedication to creating AllerScan underscores a commitment to improving the quality of life for those with food allergies, contributing to a more inclusive and informed community. |
