North Carolina to Launch Mobile Driver's Licenses in 2025 |
Digital IDs to Offer Secure and Convenient Identification for Residents |
North Carolina is set to introduce mobile driver's licenses (MDLs) by July 2025, providing residents with a digital alternative to traditional physical IDs.
Governor Roy Cooper signed House Bill 199 into law on July 2, 2024, authorizing the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) to implement MDLs. These digital licenses will serve as the legal equivalent of physical driver's licenses and will be accessible through a secure app on smartphones.
MDLs are designed to enhance security and convenience. They will contain the same information as physical licenses and can be used in various situations, such as during traffic stops or age verification at establishments. Notably, MDLs allow users to share only necessary information, safeguarding personal details.
Participation in the MDL program will be voluntary, and physical licenses will remain available. The NCDMV is currently developing the implementation plan, including the enrollment process and security measures. Further details are expected to be released as the launch date approaches.
As North Carolina prepares for this digital transition, residents can anticipate a more streamlined and secure form of identification in the near future. |
