Charlotte Residents Advised to Stay Vigilant During Copperhead Season

Experts Offer Safety Tips as Snake Activity Increases in Warmer Months

As temperatures rise in Charlotte, so does the activity of copperhead snakes, prompting experts to advise residents on safety measures.

These venomous snakes are commonly found in areas with tall grass, wood piles, and dense vegetation. Encounters often occur when individuals inadvertently step near or on a snake.

To minimize the risk of snake bites, experts recommend the following precautions:

Maintain Your Yard: Keep grass trimmed and remove debris to eliminate potential snake habitats.

Be Cautious at Night: Copperheads are more active during warm evenings. Use a flashlight and wear closed-toe shoes when walking outside after dark.

Stay Alert: Always watch where you step and avoid reaching into areas you cannot see.

If you encounter a snake, it's best to leave it alone. Attempting to handle or kill a snake increases the risk of a bite. Instead, allow the snake to move away on its own.

In the event of a snake bite, remain calm and seek immediate medical attention. Do not attempt to suck out the venom or apply a tourniquet, as these actions can worsen the injury.

By staying vigilant and following these safety tips, Charlotte residents can reduce the likelihood of dangerous encounters during copperhead season.
